than a technical migration

The 2030 deadline for customer service is fast approaching

Many companies have made the already successfully completed the . The platform has been modernized, the technical conversion is complete, and existing service processes continue to run as usual.

But that is precisely where a frequently underestimated risk lies.

Anyone who still uses the classic SAP Customer Service (CS) within SAP S/4HANA is not automatically working on a future-proof service platform. This is because classic CS is not a permanent component of SAP S/4HANA. It runs only within the so-called Compatibility Scope—that is, based on a time-limited right of use.

For many companies, this right of use expires on December 31, 2030. For certain cloud subscription models, the term is extended through the end of 2033. After that, the affected functionality may no longer be used.

For service, IT, and business leaders, this means that the transition to SAP S/4HANA Service should not be viewed as a short-term IT project, but rather as a strategic transformation of the entire service organization.

On SAP S/4HANA—but not yet modernized

Going live on SAP S/4HANA gives many organizations the impression that they have already completed the most important modernization effort. However, this is often not the case for the service area.

In many S/4HANA conversions, the classic Customer Service module was carried over virtually unchanged. This was possible because SAP gave customers time, through the Compatibility Scope, to plan the next step.

However, this transitional phase is not a long-term target architecture.

SAP S/4HANA Service is the strategic successor to SAP Customer Service and is based on a new data model, new processes, and expanded capabilities. Its implementation is therefore not a simple switchover, but rather a transformation project.

Companies should therefore assess whether they have truly modernized—or whether they are simply continuing to operate a traditional service model on a new technical platform.

Why SAP S/4HANA Service Is a Transformation Project

The transition from classic SAP CS to SAP S/4HANA Service is significantly different from a purely technical replacement.

The reason: SAP S/4HANA Service is not a direct copy of the previous Customer Service system. The solution features its own data model, new service objects, and modern processes. Existing in-house developments, extensions, and interfaces must therefore be evaluated and, in many cases, reimplemented.

Data migration is also a project in its own right. Contracts, transaction histories, and open cases must be carefully planned and transferred in a structured manner. An automatic switch at the push of a button is not the right approach.

At the same time, this very step presents a major opportunity: Companies can reduce accumulated complexity, harmonize processes, and strategically realign their service business.

The Cost of Waiting

At first glance, the 2030 deadline still seems a long way off. In reality, however, the time remaining is significantly shorter than many companies assume.

Service transformation projects often take 12 to 24 months. For international organizations, multiple companies, or complex system landscapes, the effort involved may be even greater.

If you start too late, you risk:

  • tight deadlines on the project
  • limited availability of experts

  • rising project costs

  • Unnecessary complexity in migration and integration
  • Risks Related to Support, Maintenance, and Regulatory Requirements

Once the license for classic CS expires, support, bug fixes, and legal or regulatory updates for the affected functionality will no longer be provided. For companies with mission-critical or billing-related processes, this can lead to significant compliance and operational risks.

SAP S/4HANA Service as a Strategic Opportunity

When viewed correctly, the 2030 deadline is not only a risk but also a window of opportunity.

SAP S/4HANA Service enables companies to fundamentally modernize their service processes. This includes a modern, role-based user interface, integrated financial processes, real-time margin transparency, and end-to-end integration of quotes, contracts, planning, scheduling, and execution.

As a result, service is no longer viewed in isolation, but rather as an integral part of value creation.

Of particular relevance is the connection between SAP S/4HANA Service with other solutions such as SAP Field Service & Asset Management, SAP Service Cloud, SAP Business AI Platform, and SAP Business AI. This lays the foundation for intelligent, connected, and—in the future—autonomous service processes.

On the Need to Modernize the Service Business

Many companies are now facing a key question:

Should SAP S/4HANA Service simply replace the existing customer service—or should the transition be used to position the service business for the future?

The second option offers significantly more potential.

After all, modern service organizations today need more than just reliable order processing. They need transparent processes, better data quality, mobile execution, intelligent assistance features, and the ability to implement new service and revenue models.

SAP S/4HANA Service can serve as the foundation for a new service architecture—from commercial service processing to integration with field service, maintenance, and asset management.

Conclusion: SAP S/4HANA Service is the next step toward a modern service organization

Simply switching to SAP S/4HANA is not enough to future-proof service processes.

For companies that are still using the classic SAP Customer Service within the Compatibility Scope, the clock is ticking. But the 2030 deadline should not be viewed merely as a technical deadline. It is a strategic opportunity to modernize service processes, reduce complexity, and lay the foundation for intelligent service organizations.

SAP S/4HANA Service is more than just a successor to SAP CS. It is the foundation for connected, transparent, and future-proof service processes.
