Meter-to-Cash

Seamlessly connect meter data, device management, and
field service

What is Meter-to-Cash with SAP?

Meter-to-Cash (M2C) describes the end-to-end process from collecting meter and consumption data to billing. This includes field service activities such as meter installation, replacement and removal, meter readings, as well as disconnections and reconnections.

With SAP Field Service and Asset Management (SAP FSA), you can plan, schedule, and dispatch these assignments while supporting mobile execution. The proaxia FSA Cloud Connector (PCC) integrates these processes with SAP S/4HANA Utilities or SAP ECC IS-U, enabling automated processing of collected data in the SAP backend.

M2C is not a standalone proaxia product, but an integrated solution approach: SAP Utilities for business processes, SAP FSA for planning and mobile execution, and PCC for integration and automation.

Your Business Benefits with Integrated Meter-to-Cash Processes

Fewer manual hand-offs

Device and meter data are collected directly in the field and transferred via PCC to the designated SAP processes. This reduces duplicate data entry and manual post-processing.

More Reliable Data for Subsequent Processes

Structured feedback on devices, meter readings, and work performed improves the data foundation for device management and downstream billing processes.

More Efficient Resource Planning

Collaboratively plan workloads, available capacity, and skill sets. SAP FSA supports coordinated scheduling of your field service teams—even for large-scale rollouts.

End-to-End SAP Processes

SAP Utilities, SAP FSA, and PCC work together. The connector establishes a link between field service assignments and business processing in the SAP backend.

Meter Installation, Meter Replacement, and Meter Removal

Whether it’s installation, replacement, or removal: For a successful meter deployment, the right device information, schedules, and resources must all come together.

SAP Utilities provides the order and device context. SAP FSA supports planning and scheduling. In the field, FSA Mobile guides technicians through the necessary work steps and the collection of equipment and meter data. PCC links the feedback to the corresponding SAP Utilities process and supports further processing.

The specific scope of integration is determined based on the backend used, the release, and the process model.

Disconnection and Reconnection

In the event of a service interruption or subsequent restoration of service, technical and organizational processes must work together reliably.

SAP Utilities provides the order, asset, and meter context. SAP FSA supports resource planning and scheduling. FSA Mobile enables guided on-site execution using checklists, as well as the recording of status information, meter readings, and photos. PCC links the required confirmations to the corresponding SAP Utilities process.

We will review which features are already available for the specific release and project scenario.

Meter Reading

Digital meter reading combines on-site data collection with further processing in SAP Utilities. To ensure that meter readings can be used reliably, the meter identification, the reading request, and the result must all match.

SAP FSA supports the planning and mobile execution of meter reading tasks. FSA Mobile enables the structured collection of meter readings and other information. PCC handles the integration of the relevant data and feedback into the corresponding SAP process.

The meter-reading functions shown also include roadmap content. We will review the available scope for the specific release and project.

Resource Planning for Energy Utilities with SAP FSA

Source: SAP SE, as of October 12, 2026

Plan recurring maintenance, meter readings, and larger projects on a unified platform. SAP FSA supports demand and capacity planning as well as the detailed scheduling of your field service teams.

proaxia integrates these planning functions with your processes and SAP systems. The FSA Cloud Connector already provides integration capabilities for this purpose and is continuously being enhanced. We determine which information is synchronized based on your release and process model.

This approach also makes it possible to plan large-scale smart meter rollouts in terms of order volume, deadlines, and available resources.

SAP Utilities, SAP FSA, and PCC—an integrated solution

Three components ensure a seamless meter-to-cash process:

SAPS/4HANA Utilities and SAP ECC IS-U form the business foundation for device, meter, and billing processes.

SAP Field Service and Asset Management supports demand and capacity planning, scheduling, and mobile execution with FSA Mobile.

The proaxia FSA Cloud Connector connects the systems and supports the integration, process acceleration, and automation of the intended SAP Utilities workflows.

This allows your field service teams and administrative staff to benefit from integrated processes without having to set up an additional standalone solution. The available integration features are tailored to your system environment and requirements.

From the Utilities Process to a Workable Solution with proaxia

We work with you to design integrated meter-to-cash processes—from planning your field service assignments to processing the results in the SAP backend.

proaxia provides support for process design, configuration, integration, and implementation. In doing so, we take into account your SAP landscape, the requirements of your field service teams, and the available functionality.

A Reference from the Utility Sector: Albstadtwerke

Integrating Scheduling, Mobile Work, and the SAP Backend

Albstadtwerke, in collaboration with proaxia, implemented SAP Field Service Management and the proaxia Connector in an SAP ECC environment. The focus was on the digitization of maintenance and field service processes, as well as collaboration between scheduling, technical operations, and backend systems.

Paper-based processes have been replaced by digital workflows. Mobile confirmations, checklists, and status updates support the processing of service and maintenance orders.

This case study shows how utilities can digitize their service and maintenance processes using SAP FSA and PCC. The reference report describes advanced device and meter management, as well as expanded meter-to-cash processes, as the next steps in development.

Expert Insights for Utilities:
Field Service with SAP

Utility companies face the challenge of efficiently digitalizing construction, maintenance, network, and meter management processes. Our blog post explores why modern field service goes far beyond mobile applications and how end-to-end SAP processes improve collaboration between dispatchers, technicians, and back-office teams.

The focus is on SAP Field Service and Asset Management (SAP FSA) and the proaxia FSA Cloud Connector (PCC). Together, they connect scheduling, mobile execution, and service reporting with SAP ECC or SAP S/4HANA. This reduces manual handovers and integrates technical and commercial processes.

Real-world examples from Albstadtwerke, ONTRAS, and other utility companies demonstrate how integrated field service processes can be implemented in the utilities industry. The article also highlights why seamless SAP integration provides the foundation for future automation and AI applications.

Frequently Asked Questions About Meter-to-Cash with SAP

Meter-to-Cash integrates the collection of meter and consumption data with its subsequent processing through to billing. SAP FSA and PCC support planning and mobile execution, as well as the integration of relevant data into SAP Utilities. The actual billing continues to take place in the SAP backend or in the specialized systems designated for that purpose.

No. The solution is based on the integration of SAP Utilities, SAP Field Service and Asset Management, and the proaxia FSA Cloud Connector. PCC handles the integration and supports the automation of the agreed-upon business processes.

SAP FSA supports the planning and mobile execution of field service assignments. FSA Mobile enables the structured collection of meter readings and device information. PCC integrates the required feedback with SAP Utilities. The specific scope of functionality, particularly for independent periodic meter readings, must be verified on a release- and project-specific basis.

The target process integrates SAP Utilities work orders with resource planning, mobile execution, and structured confirmation. Checklists, status updates, meter readings, and photos can all be part of the mobile workflow. The specific functions available in a given scenario are determined jointly.

Device information, meter readings, and work performed are recorded in a structured manner and made available for the intended SAP follow-up processes. This reduces the need for manual data entry and provides a better foundation for consistent billing data.

The integration architecture supports SAP ECC IS-U and SAP S/4HANA Utilities. The specific devices and meter reading processes that are actually supported depend on the backend, release, connector component, and project scope.

SAP FSA provides functions for demand and capacity planning, as well as for scheduling and dispatching field service assignments. PCC links the planning process to the relevant SAP backend processes. The exact scope of integration is tailored to the release being used and the process requirements.
